The definition I gave you in class today did not seem correct – in fact, it was not. What I was describing was understatement, and Euphemism. Here is metonymy.

Definition of Metonymy:

A word that represents something, but also has a close association to the actual thing that the word represents

For instance:

Hollywood – an area of Los Angeles where movies are made, but what it represents is American movies
China – a country, but also represents porcelin that comes from China
Arm – in baseball to say a pitcher has an arm means that he or she has an arm, but it also means that he or she has an excellent ability to pitch.
